The following is a checklist for what you might need to tell a new orienteer on the day of your event
Novice Instruction Checklist
REGISTER all novices and collect
Map, Control Card
& Clue Sheet
1. Hold Map FLAT at all times
2. Keep BLUE LINES always pointing N
- using
features or Sun or compass
3. Explain WHITE, YELLOW & GREEN
4. Explain LINEAR BLACK (tracks & fences)
5. “Walk around Map”. Look N, S, E & W but keep Map always
pointing N.
6. COMPARE DISTANCES
Map vs
actual to nearby feature.
7. COPY COURSE from NOVICE Master Map.
Take care with CIRCLES. Put number outside!
8. TAPE together Map, Control Card and Clue Sheet.
9. Show a CONTROL and how to punch Control Card.
10.TELL what TIME to be back by
and what SAFETY
DIRECTION if lost.
11.Ask Novice to POINT to 1st control and say how to get there.
Baseplate Instruction Checklist
For all courses except Novice an
orienteering compass is vital.
A. COMPASS ONLY
1. Identify baseplate,
housing, red lines
red arrow
and the magnetic needle.
2. Level
compass and turn housing. See how needle's
red end
keeps pointing to magnetic north.
B. MAP ONLY
3. Identify magnetic
grid lines and
magnetic
north arrows.
4. Identify present
location (P) and
destination
(D) on the map.
C. MAP PLUS COMPASS
5. Put long edge
of baseplate along line
(P)-(D) with housing
next to (P).
6. Turn housing
so red lines parallel the magnetic grid
lines on the map
and so red arrow points North.
7. Turn map and
compass together so
red end of
needle and red arrow agree.
8. Keep red arrow
& red needle together
and stand at housing
end of compass.
Follow direction
baseplate is pointing.
* DO NOT FOLLOW
RED NEEDLE
UNLESS GOING NORTH *
For non-orienteering
maps first draw on magnetic grid,
then
proceed as above.
12.Ask STARTER and write start time on Control
Card.
