Be part of the Oceania Carnival 2011 Action! Enter now

Thursday, 25 August 2011

This is an event you will not want to miss!  The Carnival will run from 1st to 9th October 2011 with events in Wangaratta, Wagga Wagga and Cooma.

There is still time to enter via the link here. The online entry system will be open until 4 September 2011.

As well as the traditional Australian Long Distance Championships and Australian Relay Championships the carnival has the Biennial Oceania Championships in Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay.

Events 1 & 2: Live GPS tracking spectator entertainment hits Australia – Wangaratta

Experience international style event arenas with the excitement of live GPS tracking and video being offered at an event in Australia for the very first time, thanks to the innovation of organiser, Darren Meeking and Orienteering Victoria. Orienteering is often thought of as a non-spectator sport, but with the promise of improving technology, nothing could actually be further from the truth. An incredible slice of forest has been found near Yackandandah in Victoria that will be used for the 2011 Oceania and Victorian Middle Championships. According to course setter Warren Key, it is possibly the finest couple of square kilometres in the whole of Australia. Weaved by classic Australian mining history, the extraordinary efforts and toiling of gold seekers two centuries ago literally unearthed a patch of pure orienteering delight. This, together with a run on the granite terrain of Warby Range for the Oceania and Victorian Long Distance Championships, will make it a truly memorable weekend of orienteering. Don't believe us? Well, get the one up on your competitors and watch a preview of the superb terrain and listen to the master Warren Key tell you about it himself. He wouldn't exaggerate would he?  http://www.vimeo.com/27413775 or YouTube.

Events 3 – 6: Australian Schools Championships, Burngoogee Bush Bash and Australian Relay Championships – Wagga Wagga

Xanthorrhoea Trophy

A great way to link the two carnival weekends together. The Australian Schools Individual and Relay Championships provide the chance to watch Australia's next generation of champions. The Burngoogee Bush Bash provides an excellent opportunity to prepare for the next weekend in similar but in the less demanding terrain of Murraguldrie State Forest, and an opportunity to practise skills in a less competitive environment. While the Australian Relay Championships are not a National League race, State pride is still at stake with the prize for the best State, and the honour of winning the Xanthorrhoea Trophy. Your State needs you to be in team at Murraguldrie State Forest doing your best.

Events 7 – 9: Australian Long Distance Championships, Oceania Sprint and Relay Championships - Cooma

Stay tuned next week for more information on the return to one of the best orienteering terrains in Australia, first used for the 1989 Australian 3-Days, with the next major use being the 2000 World Cup and Day 3 of the 2000 Australian 3-Days, followed by the 2001 Australian Long Distance and Relay Championships.
